The face is curly maple, so the figure moves when the light does. The rooster, the cap and the ledge that holds the book are padauk, a deep orange-red that settles toward brown over the years.
The chart is burned into the maple, not printed: cups to ounces, safe temperatures for beef, pork, poultry and fish, dry weights, a stick of butter, an egg timer. It is there for the days the book is closed.
The ledge is deep enough for a heavy cookbook or a tablet. Wipe splatters off with a damp cloth; the finish is made for a kitchen.
