The story
Mostly black walnut, stood on end so the knife works between the fibers, with short sticks of hard maple scattered through it like dropped matches. The maple carries on around the edges and down the sides.
End grain takes a knife better than any other surface and heals its own marks. It is heavier than it looks and wants oil more often in its first year; after that it settles down.
The scatter is different on every board.
