The story
Every board we make leaves short ends behind. The chaos board is where they go: walnut, hard maple, cherry, padauk and purpleheart, glued up on end in no pattern at all, then flattened and sanded like any other.
End grain is the butcher’s block surface. The knife slips between the fibers instead of cutting across them, so the edge stays sharp longer and the marks close back up. It is heavier than an edge-grain board of the same size and it wants oil a little more often in its first year.
Because it is made from what was on the bench that month, yours will not match the pictures. It will have its own arrangement.
